Does Net Neutrality Decision Illustrate New Balance of Political Power Within Ecosystem?

Some might take a cynical view of the Federal Communications Commission’s network neutrality rules, since politics matters in Washington, D.C., and matters greatly for the setting of communications policy. To a great extent, politics also reflects perceived political power. So one might argue the perceived power of the ISPs has dropped, while the power of the app providers has grown.

There was a bit of fiber consolidation down in Florida this past week that slipped past while I was travelling, and the source was of the offshore cable MSO variety.  Ok, so that’s not actually a known variety, but in this case it was the US subsidiary of Cable Bahamas doing the buying, taking out both US Metropolitan Telecom and Summit Broadband , as well as Marco Island Cable and NuVu for a combined sum of $89M. … [ visit site to read more ]

Liberty Global Bids for Kabel Deutschland

Germany’s biggest cable operator Kabel Deutschland Holding AG has received an acquisition proposal from Liberty Global. Vodafone Group earlier had made a bid, which Kabel Deutschland initially rejected as “too low.” The move illustrates the growing wave of telecom mergers many expect to see unleashed, in part because conditions for consolidation in Europe are improving, because growth has stalled and because “growth by acquisition” is becoming the surest way to boost revenues.

Michelle Hymson, FairPoint Communications

Hymson Michelle Hymson, Assistant Vice President for Wholesale Sales, FairPoint Communications ( Nasdaq: FRP ), is in an interesting position as the service provider sets a path of new growth in wholesale services. Hymson has plenty of experience to draw from to lead the wholesale team. Before joining FairPoint in 2007, Michelle held a variety of sales and leadership positions in leading telecommunications companies, including Level 3 ( NYSE: LVLT ), TelCove (which was later purchased by Level 3), and AT&T ( NYSE: T ). One of the key initiatives that Hymson has championed in the telco’s wholesale division is, not surprisingly, wireless backhaul, particularly Ethernet-based Fiber to the Tower (FTTT) services. Already serving 3G wireless operators on more than 1,600 towers in its Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont markets, FairPoint announced last April that it would provide Ethernet-over-fiber service to over half of the towers in its initial network expansion to support the region’s wireless operator’s 4G wireless rollouts.
